Expanding digital reach across Connected TV Platforms

talkSPORT, the global free-to-air 24/7 sports live streaming channel from News UK, sought to expand its digital presence by launching across major Connected TV (CTV) platforms in the UK. With a strong foothold in radio broadcasting, talkSPORT aimed to extend its reach to a growing audience that increasingly consumes sports news via video. The challenge lay in efficiently rolling out a high-quality, live-streaming video service that complemented its existing radio offering while ensuring seamless content distribution across multiple CTV devices.

Solutions

App Platform and Media Manager for seamless content distribution

To meet talkSPORT's objectives, Simplestream provided a combination of App Platform and Media Manager, two key solutions designed to streamline video content distribution and management:

  • App Platform was deployed to support talkSPORT's launch on major CTV platforms, including Amazon Fire TV, tvOS, Android, LG, and Samsung Smart TVs. This out-of-the-box solution ensured a consistent, high-quality user experience across all devices.

  • Media Manager, Simplestream's modular backend solution, powered the live simulcast of talkSPORT's channel, handling Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) management, Content Management System (CMS) control, and Server-Side Ad Insertion (SSAI) to optimise monetisation opportunities.

Results

Greater audience reach and commercial success

By integrating Simplestream's App Platform and Media Manager, talkSPORT successfully extended its footprint across the UK’s major CTV platforms, offering sports fans an enhanced way to engage with live sports news and analysis. The expanded availability has increased audience reach while enabling efficient ad monetisation through SSAI, ensuring a sustainable revenue model.

This project reinforces Simplestream’s ongoing collaboration with News UK, following its successful digital transformation of talkSPORT’s sister channel, TalkTV. It also adds to Simplestream’s growing portfolio of clients a cross the broadcast industry, including Virgin Media Television, GB News, AMC Networks International UK, and The United Rugby Championship Television (URC TV), among others.
