Virgin Media Television briefed Simplestream to develop a cutting-edge streaming platform called Virgin Media Play that would seamlessly unite live TV, on-demand content, and catch-up services in one place. The objective was to deliver a highly engaging, intuitive experience across all major devices — including web, mobile, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, connected TVs, and Liberty Global’s Horizon platform — complete with instant access to an extensive library of exclusive content.

However, this challenge went beyond simply uniting content; it was also about enabling Virgin Media Television to tap into new revenue opportunities through advanced ad monetisation and enhanced data analytics, to elevate Virgin Media Television's digital strategy.

To meet Virgin Media Television's ambitious goals, Simplestream deployed tried-and-tested OTT technology to provide a future-proof solution that transformed the Virgin Media Play service. In particular, our Media Manager automated the creation of video-on-demand assets from live broadcasts, seamlessly integrating live TV, on-demand content, and catch-up services into a unified platform.

In addition to this, the Simplestream App Platform ensured that content was accessible across a wide range of devices, including web, mobile, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, connected TVs, and Liberty Global’s Horizon platform. It also featured an intuitive user interface for easy content navigation.

Lastly, Simplestream’s App Platform utilised sophisticated server-side ad insertion technology, enabling dynamic ad insertion and real-time targeting. This not only optimised monetisation by integrating targeted advertising seamlessly into both live and on-demand content but also allowed for precise measurement and adjustment of ad performance. Simplestream’s solution elevated the user experience and unlocked significant new revenue streams for Virgin Media Play.
